The Best Healthcare System in the World?

The Republicans repeatedly claim “The US has the best healthcare system in the world.” Really? Then how do they explain the graphic below, which is from National Geographic. Just as important: Why are the Democrats afraid to take exception to the Republicans’ claims? (In the middle of typing this, Republican John Boehner just said it again and Democrat Dick Durbin agreed with him!) Until the Dems are willing to explain the problem to the American public rather than using competing healthcare-disaster anecdotes, they’ll never get the needed support for real healthcare reform.

And why aren’t the Democrats willing to say we need healthcare for everyone instead of health insurance for everyone? Get rid of the insurance industry — yes, just nationalize it — and we can provide healthcare to all including the 50 million who don’t have it for less than the total cost of the system today.

  1. As a Canadian, I simply cannot understand why the issue of universal public health care is so fraught in the U.S.A., when public schools, public roads, public libraries, public utilities, and so on have been so well established there for so long. And when public health care is the model that works well in many other places in the world. Sigh.

  2. According to WHO’s last report on the best health care systems in the world, the US came in where? Top 10? Nope. Top 20? Nope. Top 30? Nope. 37th. That’s nothing to be proud of.

Admittedly this was in the year 2000, but does anyone actually think it’s gotten any better?

Check out the two biggest indicators which show the health of a country – life expectancy (38th) and infant mortality (33rd). Exactly by what definition does the us have “the best health system in the world”? Obviously some sort of ignorant extreme patriotic world…

  3. I do live in american and I can tell you from experience I bealieve the United States has one of the worst health care systems in the world. More then half of our countries people have no health coverage and there for are not treated. Instead they are left sick and injured and not cared for. Its horrible that people say it is the best when in reality its all a LIE!!!
