Donations for Tsunami Victims

Does anyone know of a simple way to add a “Donate” button to your blog that would accept contributions for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami and send them directly to a good relief organization? I’d like to find a snippet of HTML I can add to my site for that purpose, and if I find one, I hope that other bloggers and podcasters will also post such a link. It should go to some trustworthy organization like the International Red Cross/Red Crescent.

Speaking of which, I’d like to see PayPal and Amazon (who profit quite handsomely from Donate buttons all over the web) put prominent Donate buttons on their own sites, and I think they should process the contributions at no charge. Surely the goodwill they generate would justify their costs and increase the awareness of their services.

For now, I’ve disabled my own donation page and hope that anyone thinking of sending me money for IT Conversations will instead send that much or more to help these people in need.

  1. Doug, I just posted an item about Amazon featuring a donation box for the Red Cross on the front page starting this afternoon. They took in more than $315,000 in the first four hours. I’m not sure what the protocol is for inserting my own link but here’s some of what I had to say: “Amazon’s effort is impressive. If only PayPal and parent eBay would follow suit although, I’d rather see them raise money for funds earmarked specifically for tsunami-earthquake relief. Unless the American Red Cross has changed its policy again, donations go into the general disaster fund.
Or, perhaps instead of putting a button up on their own sites, they could enable donation buttons and set up a collection system for the many relief organizations seeking funds. If you’re a PayPal/eBay user or merchant, please consider asking them to participate. I’ve already put a call in.”

  2. I can’t believe you’d suggest giving money to the red cross after the whole 911 mess up. They ask for money for one cause and give it to others, or to the organization. Oh that’s right, they changed their mind under thread of litigation from good donating people. The red cross is shit.

  3. You should simply give urls of non-profit aid organizations to which people can donate — Red Cross, UNICEF, Oxfam, Doctors Without Borders, etc., etc. — rather than collecting yourself.

  6. I am rasing money for the tsunami victims who were devestated from the badness of the storm and I can’t believe it how many people have died from so many things (disease). I think this campaign that I am running off is a very good idea. Plus I have fundraised only one thing which is selling lollipops from the marching band. I have collected $20.00 or above.
